Kanpur February 17 to February 19, 2011
On February 16th we started by road to Kanpur. The ride was good and it took two hours to reach the hotel. We were disappointed to see the state of the city roads. It shows a chaotic condition of the traffic, roads dug up and filthy everywhere. There is a mall “Z- SQUARE” nearby. We settled in the room and called a few friends known to us. We went to see the city where we lived, my old office and environs. To our surprise the quarters we lived near Motizeel were totally removed and replaced by gardens. Navin market area did not change and my office building is still there but with a new occupant. In the evening we went to Tilak Nagar to meet Mathurs’ family for dinner. All the friends we knew could not be traced. We could not contact Dr R.K.Nigam and my classmate Gokhale who started an industry in 1968. We met Dr & Mrs Rohatgi at Mathur’s house. Next day we went to IIT Kanpur to meet the director and the Engineering department and talk about my book. Pappu, son of late Dr GSN Murthy came to see us at the hotel. We had a nice time talking and we wanted to meet again at dinner the following day. We went to see the mall. It gives me an impression that in India these malls might have started with the help of World Bank money. Malls have the same shops as in the Western World and no relation to the local market such that people come to visit only.
