01-01-2009 Happy New Year and Season’s Greetings from KR and Indira Rao! It has been an eventful year with pleasurable time spent with several of you that I and Indira met during our sojourn in India; indeed memories may fade away but our meetings, brief as they were, replenished the urns of our associations and old times! Our journeys through Europe before we came to India consisted of a minimum of three night-halts at each of the trip itinerary locations including Amsterdam, Coopenhagen, Reyjkavik (Iceland), Oslo, Stockholm, Helsinki, day trip to Tallinn (Estonia), Moscow, St Petersburg, Warsaw, Prag and London. We were at India for a 2-month stay to renew our friendships and if at all possible, make new ones. Funny as it may seem, one such happened to be meeting with a co-passenger, Govardhan Rao, in the 1st AC compartment while travelling from Hyderabad to Vishakapatnam in Andhra Pradesh. At Vishkhapatnam a memorable evening was spent with Dr. MS Raju and his family over a dinner they hosted for me and Indira at a posh Park Hotel. Ever since we landed at Vishak the name of Pallavi Hospital was synonymous with health care facilities at this city. Having founded and nurtured this health unit, it was satisfying to meet and spend an evening with MS Raju and his family. No trip to India is ever replete without spending a pleasant time with Narender and his family. It was fulfilling to meet Aruna, Shirin and her two children Akshat and Jay over a sumptuous luncheon at their Saritha Vihar residence. Accompanying for this splendid lunch were Jyoti and Hari. Spending time with Narender to assimilate his several scholastic publications about tea science and tea industry in India and the global contributions of his endeavours was impressive as well as enlightening. The dinner meeting with BN Singh and his family at the Diwali Family get-together at Naval Officers Club at New Delhi was least to say gratifying. In addition to renewing the old ties, meeting the extended family members of BN Singh who occupy distinctive professional positions in India was heartening. It was impressive to meet his grand children vying to take up responsible positions in the Industry and Government. At Chenai, it was not merely a friendly meeting with Dr Dheemant Desai, who at the helm of one of India’s Premier auto manufacturing units gave me and Indira ‘a prize instructional tour’ of the industrial facility. Indira and I had ‘a first hand look’ of the factory that turns out high end cars of BMW that cost between INR 50 lakhs to 1.25 Crores for EACH BMW Car! It was a luxury tour of the luxury car manufacturing factory unit given to us by none other than the one at the helm of this facility, Dr Dheemant Desai. At Hyderabad meetings with GV Prabhakar, Director SS Musical Academy, and Sushil Goenka, Proprietor / Director of Foods, Fats and Fertilizers was like wise renewing old contacts. While the meeting with GV Prabhakar is a follow-up of the spellbound musical extrvaganza at Jackson, MS, visiting the corporate office of FFF at Somajiguda gave an opportunity to understand the ramifications of the industry. At Tadepalligudem meeting with OP Goenka, Proprietor / Director of Foods, Fats and Fertilizers though brief, was enlightening for the discussions we had about the global economy vis-à-vis world leadership role of USA. Once again A VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU AND YOUR FAMILIES! – KR & Indira Rao (Jan 1, 2009)
